Michele Petrasso and Emilia Volpe, born and married in San Marco Argentano. They arrived in Salem, Oregon, after travelling from Naples to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, then by train to Portland, Oregon, where they travelled south to Salem.
Salem is where Michele had settled when he came to America the last time.
They lived in a house in the West Salem area. Emilia did work after a few years at a local vegetable and fruit cannery (processed foods like potatoes, beans, corn, etc). She died in 1979 here in Salem.
Michele Petrasso worked in the lumber processing business and also worked in the Hop fields (hops are used in making beer). He died in Independence, Oregon, around 1947.
Emilia and Michele had three children; Ersilia, Remigio, and Elisa. Ersilia married Angelo Grosso in San Marco Argentano and they moved to Salem, Oregon, prior to Emilia Petrasso moving. Ersilia worked in the fruit and vegetable industry and she died in 1958. Remigio (we called him Ray) married in Portland, worked for the Post Office and died in 1979 in Portland, Oregon.
Elisa Petrasso married Frank Aiello in Portland, Oregon, and they had one daughter, Karen. I married Karen in 1977. Karen passed away in 1992 in Salem. Elisa passed away in Salem, Oregon in 2000.
I was in San Marco three times, but my daughter Margaret had never seen her great-grandparents town, so I took her to San Marco on september 2005.

Families Perri–Pirri–Marino

Karen Perri & her son Christian
(Karen Perri and her son Christian at S.Marco Argentano)
Carmela Pirri was born in March 1880 on the piantata of San Marco Argentano.
Her family was poor and I am sure her life was not an easy one. She was the only child in her family who survived beyond 20 years. Most of her brothers and sisters died as infants except another girl called Gaetanuzza who died at the age of 20 years.
In 1903 Carmela married Antonio Perri from Firmo in Spezzano Albanase. They had 4 children by 1913 when Antonio went off to America. Carmela and the 4 children left Italy in October, 1915 when she was 35 years old. They settled in Pennyslvania and had three more children. Antonio worked in a plant nursery in Pennsylvania but died at a young age ? around 39 years - after an accident, where his youngest son, now 85, thinks he sustained a head injury.
It took almost one hundred years to find Carmela's origins. For some reason she told her children that she had no parents and was raised by the nuns of San Marco. She even had a half sister, Angelina Marino, who lived in Cosenza till her death in 1979, but Carmela cut all ties with Italy when she left.
The family of some of her descendants has now found the beautiful town of San Marco Argentano and Firmo and the great grandsons have seen the mountain regions of his ancestors.
